CANBERRA: Australian authorities have classified this
afternoon's emergency landing of a Qantas Airways plane in Manila as a
"serious incident".
A team of four air accident investigators have been
flown to Manila to inspect the plane and interview crew.
The Qantas Boeing 747 was severely damaged by unidentified
causes an hour after it took off from Hong Kong bound for Melbourne. A hole of some
three metres 'appeared' in the fuselage, possibly after a door blew out.
The plane lost cabin pressure and oxygen masks were deployed
before the pilot descended 19,000ft under emergency procedures.
The four air accident investigators will assist Filipino
authorities in the investigation into the incident, whcih is likely to render
the aircraft out of service for up to three months.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said in a statement
that it was advised this afternoon of "a serious incident" involving
a Qantas aircraft.
"The aircraft, a Boeing 747-400 was operating a
scheduled passenger service from Hong Kong to Melbourne Australia. At
approximately 29,000 feet, the crew were forced to conduct an emergency descent
after a section of the fuselage separated and resulted in a rapid decompression
of the cabin," the statement said.
"The crew descended the aircraft to 10,000 feet in
accordance with established procedures and diverted the aircraft to Manila
where a safe landing was carried out. The aircraft taxied to the terminal
unassisted, where the passengers and crew disembarked. There were no reported
injuries."
The ATSB said initial information indicated that a section
of the fuselage had separated in the area of the forward cargo compartment.
It is not known if there was any loss of cargo or baggage in
the incident.
This is the second incident involving a jetliner flying
under Qantas colours this year which has resulted in substantial damage to an
aircraft. In February a Boeing 717 flying a domestic route suffered a hard
landing in Darwin, causing several million dollars of structural damage. A
subsequent enquiry found the pilot had experienced difficulties landing the
model of plane previously.
